“I have too much stuff.
I’m being buried alive!”
Sound familiar? So many people are struggling under the burden of clutter. This can be a difficult situation. In order to lift the weight of excess, I developed a system which creates limits and establishes boundaries. What’s your Sweep Number? teaches readers to find an individual satiation point. Finding it, one can then sweep away the excess.
Does this sound like a minimalist’s approach to life? It’s not. I’m not advocating that we all live sparse or colorless lives. Quite the opposite actually. I suggest that we follow Hans Hofmann’s advice and “eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” Being a typical woman of the 21st century, I’m not interested in living a totally pared down existence. We need to find balance … a place of contentment.
I see clients in person, via phone and through email. I’ve always been impressed by how creative my clients are. Unfortunately they all share one problem, they’re trapped under the burden of disorganization. This transitory thing--clutter-- is stopping them from functioning at their highest level. That’s too bad, because they have so much to offer. They can’t achieve everything they want to achieve because they’ve lost so much time to clutter.
NAPO, the National Association of Professional Organizers claims that the majority of people spend six weeks every year looking for things! Something’s gotta give! It’s no wonder that so many people struggle with clutter. We live in a consumer culture. There is so much excess. We have so many possessions. It seems as if they own us, instead of the other way around. We are surrounded by amazing technology. However, cell phones, computers and other techno gadgets can drain our time and distract us from the people in our lives. We generate way too much waste. We have overcrowded landfills. Run-away consumption leaves people feeling empty… overwhelmed… and in debt.
In my job as a professional organizer, I see these situations regularly. Establishing Sweep Numbers is a method of evaluating possessions. You assign a number for any given item and then hold yourself to it. Then you sweep away the excess. Once you are rid of clutter you’ll gain a wonderful sense of freedom.
When you no longer have the responsibility of caring for stuff, or searching for it, you can focus on relationships and experiences that will make your life richer.
The guide is a short read!
